At Janet Hays and Co., we believe that following a dress code for class is important both for safety in the classroom and for instilling discipline and tradition you expect when enrolling your child in dance class.  Dress code for dance class pertains to dancewear, footwear, and hairstyle.

All Students

Hairstyle

  • Long hair must be pulled up and tightly secured off the dancer’s neck.

  • A headband is sufficient for shorter hair that cannot be pulled into a hair elastic to create a ponytail/bun.

  • Only the shortest of hairstyles are permitted to be worn without something to secure them off the face.

Cover-ups/Warm-ups

  • Ballet skirts are permitted to be worn for class, but the teacher may occasionally request “no skirts”, so that she can help students correct their body alignment.

  • Jazz pants and dance shorts are also permitted for the warm-up portion of other classes. Jazz pant hems must NOT reach the floor, to prevent tripping!

  • Dancers are not permitted to wear “cheer shorts” for class.

Preschool/Kindergarten Classes

Dancewear

  • Pink leotard or unitard and pink tights

  • As a reward for working hard, dancers may wear any color of tights/leotards for class during the last week of the month!

Footwear

  • Ballet & Gym Combo (2.5 year old classes)

    • Pink leather ballet shoes with elastic sewn on

  • Ballet, Tap, & Gym Combo (3 year old and 4 - 6 year old classes)

    • Pink leather ballet shoes with elastic sewn on

    • Black patent tap shoes (preferably the "Mary Jane" style as opposed to the older "lace/tie" style. Both styles will be permitted on stage.)

  • Ballet, Tap, Gym, & Jazz Combo (Kindergarten II)

    • Pink leather ballet shoes with elastic sewn on

    • Black patent tap shoes (preferably the "Mary Jane" style as opposed to the older "lace/tie" style. Both styles will be permitted on stage.)

    • Please be sure to purchase transitional tights for class as the jazz portion of class will be held in bare feet. Transitional tights also allow for dancers to have a sock-type foot covering when wearing shoes and transition to bare feet when required.

Non-competition School-age Classes (1st - 12th Grade)

Dancewear

  • Any color leotard/ or unitard and any color tights

    • Note: Ballet students should wear a black leotard and pink tights, but as a reward for working hard, they may wear any color of tights/leotards for class during the last week of the month!

    • *We suggest transitional tights because they wear well through numerous washings and are most comfortable, according to our students. They also allow for dancers to have a sock-type foot covering when wearing shoes and transition to bare feet when required.

Footwear

  • Ballet

    • Pink leather ballet shoes with elastic sewn across the arch. We suggest Bloch or Capezio brand split-sole shoes. (Their soft leather and split sole allow for more control of the feet.)

  • Gymnastics and Lyrical/Modern

    • *Take class in bare feet

  • Hip Hop and Jazz

    • Tan slip-on jazz shoes

  • Tap

    • 1st - 6th Grade: Tan Mary Jane-style tap shoes

    • 7th - 12th Grade: Black lace-up tap oxfords
